The transfer market has been largely at a standstill this summer, because with the need to balance the books, Serie A clubs find they must sell before signing new players.
It is hardly a secret that the budgets of the Italian teams pale in insignificance to the Premier League resources, where even newly promoted clubs can out-bid the biggest Calcio giants.
This all means that when they do come to challenging for talent on the transfer market, the focus is on selling in order to fund the reinforcements, so there has to be money coming in before it can go out.
Serie A must fund reinforcements with sales

This is only partly funded by the done deals sending Joao Mario to Fiorentina and Vasilije Adzic to Sassuolo, both on loan with options to buy at the end of the season within Serie A.
More sales are likely to be required to cover this financial output, even if Calcio e Finanza did explain how Dusan Vlahovic’s outlandish salary made his final season somehow more expensive than buying two top players.
Nonetheless, Juve are the highest-spending club outside of England this summer, shelling out €137.15m in fees, compared to Manchester City’s €175.2m, Tottenham Hotspur on €267m, and Chelsea as usual way out in front with €388.95m and counting spent.
