Everyone will be watching Messi. Everyone will track Ronaldo’s every touch. Mbappé, Bellingham, Vinicius — the household names will dominate the headlines as always.
But the 2026 FIFA World Cup has always had a second story running underneath the main event. The story of the unknown who becomes unforgettable. Of the teenager who walks into a tournament and walks out a global icon.
Pelé did it at 17. Mbappé did it at 19. Enzo Fernández did it in Qatar. At every World Cup, someone nobody saw coming suddenly becomes the name on every lip.
These are the eight young players who could do exactly that this summer in North America.
1. Lamine Yamal — Spain 🇪🇸 (Age: 18)
Let’s start with the one everyone is watching — because he deserves every second of attention.
Lamine Yamal is 18 years old and already one of the most terrifying attackers in world football. The Barcelona winger is left-footed, operates from the right, and spends 90 minutes per game making experienced defenders look like they’ve never played football before. He dribbles past people as if it’s effortless. He creates chances. He scores from distance. He does it on the biggest stages without blinking.
He was the best player at Euro 2024 — a tournament Spain won — and followed it up with a stunning club season, scoring 24 goals in all competitions for Barcelona as they won La Liga.
Spain are the tournament favorites. Yamal is their engine. The bookmakers have him as the clear frontrunner for the Best Young Player award — and for very good reason. If Spain go deep, Yamal’s World Cup moments could be the defining images of this entire tournament.

2. Arda Güler — Türkiye 🇹🇷 (Age: 20)
Every World Cup needs a wildcard. A player from an underdog nation who takes the spotlight by force. In 2026, Arda Güler might be that man.
The Real Madrid playmaker is one of the most gifted left-footed technicians in world football. He controls tempo, breaks defensive lines with his passing, and has already proven he belongs among the elite — no Real Madrid teammate created more chances than Güler in La Liga this season, tied level with Vinícius Júnior. He also scored the fastest goal in Real Madrid Champions League history this season, finishing after just 35 seconds against Bayern Munich.
Türkiye haven’t been at a World Cup since their extraordinary third-place finish in 2002. The expectations on Güler’s shoulders are enormous — but so is his talent. If Türkiye can advance from their group (they face Australia, Paraguay, and a blockbuster clash against the host USA), Güler could genuinely light up the knockout rounds.

3. Warren Zaïre-Emery — France 🇫🇷 (Age: 20)
France are built around experience. Mbappé leads the line. The squad is stacked. But the heartbeat of Les Bleus could be one of the youngest players in their squad.
Warren Zaïre-Emery is 20 years old and plays with a maturity that makes that age feel impossible. The PSG midfielder controls games from the middle of the pitch — pressing relentlessly, distributing with intelligence, carrying the ball through defensive lines, and reading the game like a seasoned veteran. He rarely wastes possession. He never panics. And he has the stamina to run 90 minutes in North American summer heat.
Tournament football is won in midfield, and France know that. Zaïre-Emery is already a key piece of the puzzle. A deep France run — which is very much expected — could make him one of the names of this summer.
Watch him in: Group I — France kick off June 16.
4. Désire Doué — France 🇫🇷 (Age: 21)
France are so good they have two players on this list.
Désire Doué is the next superstar off the French football production line — a PSG attacker of extraordinary versatility who can play centrally, out wide, or as an attacking midfielder. He won the Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year and the Champions League Young Player of the Season in the same campaign. He represented France at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where they won silver.
The 21-year-old has pace, agility, and a natural instinct to find space in dangerous areas. In a France side that could potentially reach the final, Doué will get his minutes — and when he does, he has the quality to be devastating.
Watch him in: Group I alongside Zaïre-Emery.
5. Kenan Yıldız — Türkiye 🇹🇷 (Age: 21)
Türkiye have so much young talent they also get two entries.
Yıldız was born in Germany but chose to represent Türkiye — a decision that could define his legacy. The Juventus forward had a genuine breakout season in Serie A this year, winning Serie A Rising Star of the Season after scoring 10 goals and adding six assists in 36 league games. He was named Serie A player of the month and rising star of the month multiple times.
A winger who can also play as a number 10, Yıldız combines direct running with technical quality and a serious shot from distance. Alongside Güler, he forms one of the most exciting young attacking partnerships at this entire tournament. Neither of them were even born the last time Türkiye played at a World Cup.
That changes this week.
Watch him in: Group D — alongside Güler in Türkiye’s attack.
6. Kobbie Mainoo — England 🏴 (Age: 21)
England’s midfield has been a problem for years. Kobbie Mainoo looks like the solution.
The Manchester United midfielder is 21 but already plays like a senior statesman in the centre of the park. At Euro 2024, he posted the best passing accuracy among midfielders in 40 years of tournament records. He thrives under pressure, receives the ball in tight spaces and moves it quickly, reads the game defensively ahead of his years, and brings genuine calm to a team that has historically looked anything but.
Mainoo himself described making the squad as “a dream come true” — but he’s no passenger. He’s expected to start when England rotate and could force his way into the first-choice XI. If England — one of the favorites at +650 — can finally live up to their potential, Mainoo’s composure in the middle will be a major reason why.
Watch him in: England’s group fixtures beginning June 12.
7. Yan Diomande — Ivory Coast 🇨🇮 (Age: 19)
Here’s your wildcard pick. The name you might not know yet — but will by the time this tournament is over.
Yan Diomande is 19 years old, plays for RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga, and is already being linked to PSG, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Liverpool, Manchester United, and Chelsea. His market value sits at around €90 million. And he hasn’t even played at a World Cup yet.
The Ivory Coast winger brings explosive pace, direct dribbling, and sharp playmaking in wide areas. He had 12 goals and eight assists in 33 Bundesliga games this season — numbers that would be exceptional for any player, let alone a teenager. The World Cup is the perfect stage for him to announce himself to anyone still unfamiliar with the name.
Watch him in: Ivory Coast’s group stage.
8. Pau Cubarsí — Spain 🇪🇸 (Age: 19)
The final name on this list isn’t an attacker. But don’t let that diminish the significance of what he brings.
Pau Cubarsí is 19 years old and already considered one of the best centre-backs in world football. ESPN named him the sixth-best centre-back in the game in 2025 — a staggering accolade for a teenager. He is an elite ball-playing defender: calm under pressure, precise in his passing, intelligent in his positioning, and composed in a way that senior players spend careers trying to develop.
As part of the Spain side that could win this entire tournament, Cubarsí will be a crucial figure at the back. If Spain keep clean sheets and march to the final, his name will be discussed alongside the attackers who got the goals. Defenders can be the players of tournaments too — and at 19, Cubarsí is already good enough to prove it.
Watch him in: Every Spain match — he’s expected to start throughout.
The Next World Cup Star Is Already Here
Every generation of football produces a World Cup that announces the next great player. This summer in North America, with more matches, more exposure, and a global audience bigger than ever before, the stage has never been larger.
Will it be Yamal claiming his place as the best player on the planet? Güler dragging Türkiye into the last eight? A completely unknown name from an unexpected nation that nobody saw coming?
That’s the beauty of the World Cup. The next icon is already on a plane to North America. We just don’t know which one yet.
