Reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport claim that 22-year-old centre-forward Nicolo Tresoldi has ‘said yes’ to representing the Italy national team at senior level and that Roberto Mancini is hoping to be able to call him up for Nations League fixtures taking place in September.
Gazzetta: Mancini hopes to include Tresoldi in September’s Italy squad
Tresoldi was born in Cagliari to Italian parents, but moved to Germany as a teenager and went on to represent Hannover 96 before signing for Club Brugge in a permanent transfer in the summer of 2025.
Tresoldi has eight caps for Germany’s U19s and 24 for their U21s. He has netted a goal every other game (12 from 24) with the U21 squad. He has not represented Italy at any age group.
The 22-year-old, who has started the season with three goals in three games for Club Brugge, has not been capped at senior international level and is still eligible for either Germany or Italy.
However, according to the latest reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport, Tresoldi has agreed to play for Italy at senior level and the formal process of switching nationalities through FIFA has already begun.
According to Friday’s report, Italy hope to have approval from FIFA before September 18, which is when Roberto Mancini is expected to name his squad for Nations League fixtures against Belgium on September 25, Turkey on September 28, France on October 2 and Turkey again on October 5.
Mancini is expected to name a squad of around 30 players for the maxi-international break, which will see four games played in a longer period between September 21 and October 6, rather than having international breaks in both September and October, as is typically the case.
La Gazzetta dello Sport is confident that Alessandro Romano has also agreed to represent Italy rather than Switzerland at senior international level, and that there is hope for Udinese defender Matteo Palma as well. The 18-year-old was born in Berlin and has represented both Italy and Germany at youth level.
