Pervis Estupinan’s performance in the friendly with Inter prompted a common response from Milan fans online, namely that it was a mistake not to sell him to Aston Villa.
It had been reported several weeks ago that a basic agreement was close for a sale to the Premier League side for around €15m.
However, coach Ruben Amorim asked the club to hold off so that he could evaluate the player in pre-season training.
Estupinan showed usual Milan faults
The Ecuador international came off the bench at half-time in today’s 1-1 draw with Inter and promptly gave the ball away for the goal, then failed to cut out the Nicolò Barella roll across for Federico Dimarco to tap in.
There were a few other errors too, including a late yellow card for clattering into the back of Yann Bisseck, forcing the defender off with a head injury.
A quick glance on social media shows many responses were the same when asked what Milan had learned from that match, specifically that Estupinan is not up to the standard required for this team.
“If anyone still had any doubts on the total inadequacy of Pervis Estupinan, the first nightmare seven minutes of his second half were the clearest evidence. A player like this cannot be first choice at Milan and must be sold as soon as possible,” wrote Lorenzo Lollo.
“Estupinan is not going to hack it, nothing more to evaluate. He’s got to go,” added Matt Santangelo.
It may well be too late to change their minds on a sale, though, because today Aston Villa instead shook hands with Atletico Madrid for Italy international Matteo Ruggeri in the same left-back slot.
