Inter have Martinez concerns after back-to-back Real Madrid and Udinese errors

Inter maintained their perfect start to the 2026-27 Serie A season with a 5-3 win over Udinese in San Siro on Monday evening, but there are growing concerns regarding goalkeeper Josep Martinez, who has made high-profile errors in his last two Nerazzurri outings.

Martinez concerns after back-to-back errors for Inter

This is Martinez’s first season as Inter’s outright no.1. He joined the club from Genoa in 2024 but spent the previous two seasons serving as an understudy to the now-departed Yann Sommer.

Inter had considered bringing in a new goalkeeper during the summer transfer window: Guglielmo Vicario and Emiliano Martinez among the names linked with a move to San Siro, but in the end, the club decided to reinvest those funds elsewhere and promote Martinez to the starting goalkeeper role instead.

Inter did sign a new goalkeeper during the summer transfer window, but ultimately went with the low-cost option in 33-year-old Ivan Provedel, who was brought in to provide cover and competition for Martinez.

Provedel is now eyeing an opportunity in the Inter starting XI, though, following big errors in back-to-back matches from his Spanish teammate.

Martinez was caught far too easily in possession inside his own six-yard box for the second goal of the game when Inter lost 2-1 away against Real Madrid in their first Champions League test of the season last week.

He received a routine pass across the back from Alessandro Bastoni, took a touch inside his own six-yard box, but hesitated over his second, which allowed Federico Valverde to race through, close him down and poke the ball into the back of the net. That put Madrid 2-0 up inside 23 minutes after a series of Inter errors, the first of which was not Martinez’s fault.

There was, however, another error in Inter’s 5-3 comeback victory over Udinese in Serie A on Monday evening.

Andy Diouf was outmuscled by Keinan Davis inside the penalty area, allowing the Englishman to play a low cross into the six-yard box. Jurgen Ekkelenkamp got a deft touch on the ball, which completely fooled a poorly-positioned Martinez, who had left far too much space to aim at at his near post.

La Gazzetta dello Sport has now questioned whether Inter should stick with Martinez of hand the no.1 spot over to the more experienced Provedel, who may offer a touch more security.
