Former Inter and Italy striker Aldo Serena is impressed by John Stones’ impact against Real Madrid despite the Nerazzurri’s 2-1 loss and praises Andy Diouf: ‘ I have never seen Cucurella in such difficulty.’
Inter lost 2-1 to Real Madrid on Tuesday in the 2026-27 Champions League opener.
Errors from Curtis Jones and Josep Martinez led to Real Madrid’s two goals in the first half, but Serena, a former Inter, Milan, Juventus and Torino striker, feels Martinez, the Inter goalkeeper, reacted strongly.
“His reaction was that of a professional and an adult who immediately processed a glaring error in a context like the Bernabéu,” Serena told Sky via FcInter1098.
“He might have reacted differently, but he made up for it. It’s not a problem precisely because of the high-profile reaction.”
After his mistake, Martinez kept Inter alive with two big saves on Jude Bellingham.
Stones ‘set the defensive guidelines’ for Inter vs. Real Madrid
Benjamin Pavard was replaced by Stones during the break, and the Englishman’s performance in Madrid makes Serena believe that the ex-Manchester City star will play a key role this season.
“Experience can’t be bought; it’s acquired over time, and he has plenty to sell,” he said.
“He played at the highest level: he came in calmly, set the defensive guidelines, and convinced his teammates. Over time, he will bring balance to the team, which Chivu expected.”
Overall, despite the defeat, Serena feels Inter’s performance was positive.
“Inter had plenty of chances to go to the net. Courtois was the man of the match for Real, and that says it all,” he concluded.
“The result could be broader on both sides. Real Madrid’s three strikers are superlatives, one of a kind. Inter showed very exciting dynamics on the wings above all: Diouf played a fantastic match, and I have never seen Cucurella in such difficulty.”
Diouf played as a right wing-back and spoke to reporters at full time, admitting the Nerazzurri were “frustrated” by their mistakes that led to Real Madrid’s goals.
