The FIGC (Italian FA) has released a statement formally withdrawing its support of under-fire FIFA President Gianni Infantino: ‘We will continue to work alongside UEFA and the other European associations to promote an idea of football based on merit and sustainability, putting fans at the centre’.
Official: FIGC withdraws support for Infantino
Infantino’s future as President of the world football’s governing body has been cast under doubt following his highly-controversial plans to sell stakes in certain competitions, including the World Cup, to private investors.
A number of associations and high-profile individuals have already withdrawn their support of Infantino ahead of the next FIFA Presidential elections, which are scheduled to take place in the spring of 2027.
The Italian FA on Wednesday have formally withdrawn their support for Infantino in a statement released by its President Giovanni Malagò.
“The Italian Football Federation has decided to withdraw support for Gianni Infantino’s candidacy for the FIFA Presidential elections scheduled for March 2027,” read the statement released by the FIGC on Wednesday.
“This decision is intended to express the FIGC’s position relating to the recent initiatives promoted by the FIFA President in a clear and transparent way, in full agreement with UEFA and its President Aleksander Ceferin.”
FIGC President Giovanni Malagò commented: “We will continue to work alongside UEFA and the other European associations to promote an idea of football based on merit and sustainability, putting fans at the centre.”
